Tori Amos is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. A classically trained musician, she has a mezzo-soprano voice. Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on the piano, Tori Amos won a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Institute at the age of five: she's the youngest student ever to be admitted. She was forced to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was withdrawn for "musical insubordination".
The musician was the lead singer of the short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before breaking through as a solo artist in the early 1990s. Her songs tackle a wide range of subjects, including sexuality, feminism, politics and religion.
